aigoo!
I have a new roommate and she's Korean! Her name's Park Hee Seon, (
박희선) but she prefers to be called by her English name, Joy. She's preparing to be a missionary and is in the Philippines to learn English. What a very symbiotic setup! I want to learn Korean (in preparation for the day when I get to meet Kwon Sang Woo
). We were talking the other night and she had her Korean-English dictionary, while I had my English-Korean dictionary. Hehe.
At first we thought that she was older than me (she said she was 26), so I've been calling her "onni" and Hee Seon-ssi. But in Korea, they include the 9 months (rounded off to a year) that one was inside their mother's tummy. So when they are born, they are automatically 1 year old. Which makes my roommate only 25, and me older than her. But I insisted that she NOT call me "onni"! She calls me by my nickname, "Aggie", which actually means "baby" (
아기) in Korean. She's not so much into Korean dramas and movies though. But then she grew up watching them! Whereas it's a novelty for me.
aigoo (
아이고) Oh! Ah! Dear me! Oh my! My goodness! Good heavens! Good Lord! Good God! OMG!
